Milford Sound

Change of plan

We were about to leave our motel, excited for our upcoming kayak & walk up in Milford Sound. As we got into the car we received the message that due to weather, they were canceling all tours for today. Not the news we wanted to hear. Since the road to Milford Sound is said to be an unforgettable journey in itself, we wanted to take the drive regardless. Before we set off we checked if there were any available spots on any of the Milford Sound cruises and we got lucky and managed to score tickets for the 13:15 cruise.

When we started our drive it was raining and really cloudy. The first part of the road was like any other New Zealand road offering really nice views. But, once we reached the mountain pass it simply blew our minds! It was amazing!

Once we reached Milford Sound we stopped for some coffee and ate our sandwiches. We encountered a funny looking bird hopping/running around in the parking lot. We found out it was a Weka, a large flightless bird.

Milford Sound, runs 15 kilometers inland from the Tasman Sea and is surrounded by sheer rock faces that rise 1,200 meters or more on either side. The sun came out and we settled on the top deck on the cruise. It was still very windy and our raincoats came into good use against the wind.
