Another day, another fiord

Doubtful Sound

Today was the day we were going on a cruise in Fiordland (as yesterday's cruise wasn't planned). We had scheduled a trip to Doubtful Sound and figured we'll go today as well since we wouldn't get a refund regardless. And boy are we happy we went today as well!

The experience was completely different. We started with a short bus drive from Te Anau to Manapouri where the real trip started. From there we were taken across the lake to West Arm Visitor Centre, it was only a 45min boat ride! We got loaded on another bus that took us along Wilmont Pass road, over Wilmont Pass and down to Deep Cove, the dock in Doubtful Sound. The bus took another hour while offering quite amazing views.

Once in Deep Cove we embarked on our 3 hour cruise for the day. Our journey took us all the way out to Tasman Sea where the waves were big and we got to see the seal colony before heading back in to calmer waters. On the way in and out our captain took detours into the differnt arms of Doubtful Sound. When we reached the inner end of Hall arm our captain slowed down the ship and turned off the engines, the sound of nature was utterly wounderful, too bad it can’t be captured in a photo.
To get back to town we then again had to traverse Wilmont Pass and Lake Manapouri.
