Kaikoura

Whales!

Sitting on our balcony at our hotel in Kaikoura, sadly realizing we are on the last week of our journey and I'm not ready to go home just yet!

We set out early from Amberly where we stayed the night, the main target of the day was to reach Kaikoura in time to catch our Whale Watching Cruise at 12:45pm. We reached Kaikoura around 11am and figured we had time to drive to a food truck we seen on travel blogs for some New Zealand CrayFish before the cruise. Nins bin did not dissapoint at all, we had a tail each for lunch which was much more than we needed!

We had booked the Captains cabin for our cruise, allowing us to sit in a small cabin right behind the captain (max 12 guests). We also got our own private viewing deck providing unobstructed views of the potential whales.

We were in big luck today, the first whale was found directly after the 5 min cruise out to open sea. Then we waited a while when they were trying to locate a second whale they had spotted earlier in the day.
And he came up to the surface as well for a show off. By the time he was ready to dive again, the first whale resurfaced, and then a third whale emerged, and then all three were up at the same time! They say it's unusual to see two at the same time, but three, that almost never happens!

All in all it was simply amazing! And don't worry, the whales are not disturbed by the boat. It's a specifically designed ship with no underwater propellers.
